Convertible Infant Car Seat

Rear facing car seats come in two types: an infant only car seat, or a convertible infant car seat.  These rear facing car seats are meant for infants generally from 5 lbs up to 22 to 32 lbs (depending on the manufacturer).  The infant only car seats are generally smaller and can be used to carry the infant, but their upper weight and size limits (5 to 22 lbs) are generally lower than the convertible infant car seats.  The convertible infant car seats, or infant-toddler car seats, are a little bulkier, but the upper weight limits for the rear facing position are higher (from 5 lbs to 32 lbs).  It is generally considered safer to keep the infant in the rear facing position as long as possible (until the manufacturer’s recommendations are exceeded).  Unlike the rear facing only infant car seats, the convertible infant car seat can be converted to a forward facing car seat for your toddler.

The forward facing car seat is to be used when your infant outgrows their rear facing car seat, or if they exceed the weight or height recommendations of the rear facing convertible inant car seat.  It is widely recommended to keep your infant in a rear facing car seat as long as possible, until they outgrow the rear facing car seat (based on the manufacturers recommendations).  The forward facing car seat is usually used for infants over 22 lbs to 32 lbs, up until around 40 lbs to 80 lbs.  There are several forward facing car seats available, such as convertible infant car seat, a forward only facing seat, a forward facing seat with a booster seat attachment, built-in seats, and travel vests.

Convertible infant car seats are able to be used as rear facing car seats for infants, then as forward facing car seats once your infant outgrows the rear facing car seat.  These convertible infant car seats allow your infant to stay in the rear facing position longer than an infant only car seat, and they can save you money because you will not have to purchase a second forward facing seat.
